Privacy is a precondition of an open society

Building on David Chaum's blind signatures, Eric Hughes's manifesto argued that privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age: people must be free to choose what they reveal, and that selectivity is what keeps openness workable.

Crypto anarchy over trusted third parties

Tim May predicted that anonymous messaging, digital cash and pseudonymous reputation would make state control of information materially irrelevant — no permission needed, no trusted intermediary required.

Code is the argument

Cypherpunks shipped source code as activism: PGP survived a weapons-export investigation, volunteers ran anonymous remailers, and hashcash, b-money and bit gold proved digital scarcity could work. Bitcoin inherited all of it.

Chaum draws the blueprint

David Chaum publishes “Security without Identification: Transaction Systems to Make Big Brother Obsolete” in Communications of the ACM (October 1985), introducing blind signatures — the cryptography behind his ecash and the idea of payments that never leak identity.

The Crypto Anarchist Manifesto

Timothy May writes a 497-word manifesto — “A specter is haunting the modern world, the specter of crypto anarchy” — and distributes it online. It circulates widely from 1992 on the Cypherpunks mailing list.

1991

PGP is released — and treated as a weapon

Phil Zimmermann releases Pretty Good Privacy, putting strong encryption in anyone's hands. The U.S. government opens a criminal investigation for “exporting munitions without a license” — his personal Crypto War, dropped in January 1996.

The Cypherpunks mailing list is born

Eric Hughes, Tim May and John Gilmore start the list after early Bay Area meetings; hacker Jude Milhon coins the name “cypherpunk” from cipher plus punk. By 1994 it counts around 700 subscribers.

“Cypherpunks write code”

Eric Hughes publishes A Cypherpunk's Manifesto: “Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age… Cypherpunks write code. We know that someone has to write software to defend privacy.”

The Clipper Chip escalates the Crypto Wars

The Clinton administration proposes the Clipper Chip, an NSA-designed encryption chip with government key escrow. Privacy advocates mobilize against it, and the plan is abandoned by 1996.

Szabo coins smart contracts

Nick Szabo describes “smart contracts” — digital agreements that enforce themselves without intermediaries — a concept that later underpins everything from Bitcoin scripting to Ethereum.

The tide turns in the Crypto Wars

In January the government drops the three-year PGP investigation. In December, in Bernstein v. United States, a federal court accepts that software code is speech protected by the First Amendment. Export controls begin to loosen.

Hashcash invents proof of work

Adam Back proposes Hashcash on the mailing list — originally a way to price email spam with CPU time. Its proof-of-work idea becomes the engine of Bitcoin mining, and the list peaks at an estimated 2,000 subscribers.

1998

Digital cash designs converge

In November, Wei Dai publishes b-money, an anonymous distributed cash enforced by its participants. Nick Szabo's bit gold — designed the same year, written up in 2005 — describes an unforgeably costly digital asset. Both are direct ancestors of Bitcoin.

2004

Hal Finney builds RPOW

The cypherpunk veteran launches Reusable Proofs of Work, the first system that lets hashcash-style tokens change hands — a dry run for digital money he would soon help launch.

The whitepaper lands on the cryptography list

Satoshi Nakamoto posts “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System” to the metzdowd cryptography mailing list, citing Hashcash and b-money among its eight references.
