Early privacy activists
As personal computing and the internet spread, a loose network of technologists began treating cryptography as a civil-liberties tool — not only a military or banking specialty.
Before Bitcoin was software, it was a demand: privacy should come from cryptography, not from asking governments or companies for permission. The cypherpunks wrote that demand into mailing lists, manifestos, and prototypes — then Satoshi assembled their unfinished toolkit into a running currency.
The cypherpunk movement was a late-1980s/1990s community of cryptographers and activists who argued that strong encryption was the only reliable defense for privacy. Their mailing list, manifesto, and tools — including Hashcash, b-money, and Bit Gold — supplied both the ideology and key technical pieces Bitcoin later combined. Satoshi published on a cryptography list descended from that culture and cited cypherpunk-era work directly.
The movement is not a company or a single paper. It is a sequence of people who kept writing code when policy alone looked insufficient.

The list became the movement's workshop: anonymous remailers, digital cash, and resistance to surveillance were debated in public, by people who expected to ship software.

Hughes wrote the line that still defines the culture: privacy must be defended by individuals, and 'cypherpunks write code.' The manifesto rejected waiting for institutions to grant privacy.

Hashcash made computation a scarce resource against spam. b-money and Bit Gold sketched decentralized money. None of these was Bitcoin — but Bitcoin's whitepaper later stood on their shoulders.
Hal Finney
Finney's RPOW experimented with transferable proof-of-work tokens. In 2009 he would receive the first Bitcoin transaction from Satoshi and help debug the early network.
Satoshi Nakamoto
Satoshi published the whitepaper to a cryptography mailing list, cited Hashcash and b-money-era ideas, and launched a peer-to-peer cash system that finally matched cypherpunk requirements: no trusted intermediary, censorship resistance, and rules enforced by code.
Not every cypherpunk built Bitcoin. These names mark the shortest path from manifesto to mainnet.
Defined the movement's ethic: privacy through working software, not petitions. The manifesto is still the best short explanation of why Bitcoin's design values look the way they do.
