Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC to have two Papa John's pizzas delivered in Jacksonville, Florida, arranged through a forum post. It is generally treated as the first commercial purchase with bitcoin and set an early market price of roughly $0.004 per coin.
Jed McCaleb repurposed a domain built for trading Magic: The Gathering cards into a bitcoin exchange. Sold to Mark Karpelès in 2011, Mt. Gox went on to handle around 70% of global bitcoin volume before its collapse — and defined exchange risk for a decade.
